making platformer in 1 month project ~Postmortem~

Surprise~surprise~!
Yesterday I smashed all the bugs and today is the launching day! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

I made it to 1 month this time, instead of weekly or daily game development.
More surprises are that this project opens up things that I don't see in the shorter projects.

Let's get them down!

  • vertical slice, the core mechanic is SUPER IMPORTANT!
This is one important element of game development. I don't feel it back then when working on smaller projects, but it does scream when working on this project.
No matter how many stages I add, the core will always be the same. I can imagine clearly now how Super Mario Bros was made.
  • Anything that you input manually, will be prone to ERROR!
This happens at the end of the project, where I connect things out manually. All of them are string input.
Guess what? So many bugs that I created by accident.
  • Backup and migrating project
This one is a Unity-related thing that I learn. We should backup the Asset, ProjectSettings, AND Packages folder to prevent errors.
  • Using asset stores is not evil, but...
If I'm using an engine from the asset store, I better not try to break out of their already built-in system. It's just...complicated.
Play by their rules is the best way possible.
Using assets like models and textures are much more reliable to use in many ways, without worrying about how they work.

That's all that I can think of right now.
I'm going to post something else on  https://ko-fi.com/rechronicle if you want to read more on what I learn that is not specific to this game project.

Heh, alright then, enjoy the game!
Time to rest for me before tackling the next challenging project.
